Letter to Your Kindergartner

1

Is your child going to kindergarten? You may be wondering, where did all that time go? Here is a letter I wrote for my son on his first day of Kindergarten. These moments are bitter sweet. Enjoy every moment!

My Dear Child,

You had your first day of kindergarten!

It is still amazing to me that you are now in school. Many people have asked me if I’m going to cry. I’m happy for you but also miss you dearly.

I know you are ready for kindergarten.

You do crafts every morning, learn new things, build creations, make your own food, read books, and help around the house. You have been so brave going to school.

Brave does NOT mean being afraid and doing something. Brave is doing the right thing when no one else is looking, even when it is hard. You will make your own good choices and listen to your heart.

I want you to know that there was a little girl in kindergarten a long time ago. She would go home and cry most days from school. Boys would tease her, touch her, chase her, and call her names. She was quiet and the more she was made fun of, the quieter she was. The quieter she was, the fewer friends she had. She feared school. I think if there was one person to stick up for that little girl and said, that is wrong don’t call her names, it might have changed this little girl’s experience in kindergarten.

That little girl was me. The children in your class this year, all have feelings. Remember to be brave with all children in your class. So please treat each one with love.

If you see a child being left out or teased, you will feel in your heart that it isn’t right. Your heart might tell you to ask someone to play or to sit with someone at lunch that is alone. It might be inviting a girl to play even when the other boys tease her. These things will be hard to do, but you can do hard things.

We love you so much and when you are home our family is complete.

Please remember that when you are at school, you, your classmates and your teacher are complete too.

You have so much to learn this year and I will be here for you. I will not ask you every day “how is your day?” But I will want to know how you feel, what makes your heart want to burst and any burning questions you may have.

I am here for you always.

I love you for who you are,

Your mommy
