We’re headed into a new season and it’s back-to-school time for many of our kids. For kids that grow a size or two every year, that means purchasing a whole new wardrobe! We all know kids can be notoriously hard on clothes and babies only wear them for a few months at a time, so why not try to save a few dollars by buying gently used clothes at a local consignment sale or shop? If you’re looking to declutter and make some money at the same time, this list will also help you find a location where you can sell the kid’s clothes you no longer need! Make sure to click on the links for more details about how to shop these sales and don’t forget to check out our post on Free Clothing and School Supplies!

Buying Online

There are also resources online for buying gently used clothing. There are many buy/sell pages on Facebook, even broken down by the neighborhood you live in. Many moms swear by eBay for snagging special items. Check out Ohio Mom to Mom Sales Facebook Page where many consignment sales in Ohio are posted.

A few tips for shopping consignment sales:

  • Some sales allow you to purchase a ticket for early entry. I find this helpful if you’re looking for a hot item or clothes for older kids (which are usually harder to come by and not in as great of shape.)
  • Most of the sales I have been to provide bags for shopping, but you may want to bring your own bag just in case.
  • If you consign at a sale, you often get the first opportunity to shop.
  • Show up early for the best selection.
  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing and don’t carry a large purse that will get in your way.
  • Check for stains and holes as you shop; most sales do not allow returns.
  • Make sure to check what forms of payment are accepted at the sale.

After getting married and moving to Columbus with her husband Eric in 2008, they helped start Capital City Grace Church. Currently, Julie is the Children’s Ministry Director at her church and blogs about her experiences exploring the city she loves to call home with her sons, who are now 4 and 20 months. Julie loves trying new recipes and doing creative projects but her most common achievements these days are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and building Lego police stations. Her favorite things include big cities, coffee (and lots of it!), spending time with friends, traveling and ice cream (lots and lots of it!).
