Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Columbus

As soon as the calendar says February 15th, the red comes down and the green comes out at our house! St. Patrick’s day has always been a big part of my life. I can remember going to see Irish dancers every year, eating cabbage and corned beef, and seeing my parents joy surrounding the holiday. My friends even call to wish me a “Merry Christmas” on St. Patrick’s Day, knowing the importance of the day.

Since my girls were little, I’ve wanted them to know the importance of the holiday as well and hope it’s a day that will also hold special memories for them. There is so much to do around the city with your kids and even better, this year it falls on a Friday! So get your jiggin’ shoes on, and get ready to wear your green!

St. Patrick’s Day Parade-Downtown Columbus: The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Columbus is sponsored by the Shamrock Club of Columbus. The day will begin with a Mass at Holy Cross Church at 9:30 a..m.  The Parade will step off at 11:30 a.m. on Nationwide Blvd. in the Arena District and will end at Veteran’s Memorial on W. Broad Street. The family reunion will start at 1:00 p.m. For more information click here 

March 18th, 2017 

St. Patrick’s Day Parade-Dublin, Ohio: Still ready to rock and celebrate over the weekend? You are in luck! This year, Dublin will hold their famous St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 18th, 2017. Your kids will be ready to collect candy and see lots of bands and entertainment! Check out historic Dublin after the parade and enjoy lunch at the many famous Irish pubs. For more information click here 

Pancake Breakfast- Dublin, Ohio: Before the parade, be sure to hit up the pancake breakfast at the Brookdale Trillium Crossing Senior Living Center at Sells Middle School. Each year, they hold a breakfast to precede the parade as well as the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month (September – May). It looks like special shamrock pancakes could even be on the menu! Blarney Bash- Dublin, Ohio: This is an awesome event! Bring the whole family down after the parade, for a day of family fun and festivities. There will be live music, dancers, games, and crafts (noon-5 p.m.) for the kids. The event extends until 11 p.m. for the adult crowd as well! Buy your tickets in advance to obtain a discount. A day of rest! Or if you have a day without your kids you may want to hit up the Survivor’s party at Byrne’s Pub 

St. Patrick’s day at home

If you aren’t up for venturing out with your kiddos, try some simple crafts at home to celebrate the holiday!

Marshmallow Shamrocks– Have you kiddos attach a marshmallow to a stick and dip it in green a paint to make the perfect shamrock!

Fruit Loop Rainbows– A great fine motor craft for your preschool aged kiddos. Have your little ones first string a marshmallow on the pipe cleaner followed by fruit loops and then end with another marshmallow to complete your clouds with a rainbow! You may have some requests for a snack too or a quote at our house “Mom, you bought fruit loops?!” 

Leprechaun Hats– If you remember last month, I love to use toilet paper rolls. This one can be used to make a super cute Leprechaun Hat. Simply have your lads and lassies paint the hat green and attach it to a round piece of cardstock. Your little ones can help glue on the black and gold buckle as well!

We also want to remember those we are thankful for the month of March. Make a quick sign that says “We are lucky to have _____ in our lives”. Each night, have the kids pick a family member, friend, neighbor, etc. that they are thankful for. Put their name on a shamrock and post it under the sign for the month of March. It’s the little reminders that we have so much to be thankful for!
