You might have heard a lot of things about turmeric lately so I’m going to explain what it is, how it is good for you and give you a few recipes as well.
Turmeric is more than just curry.
Turmeric, with its vivid orange flesh and slightly peppery bite, originated in southern Asia and is a member of the ginger family. While it is the main ingredient in curry, there is so much more to this spice than its great taste.
More Turmeric, Less Inflammation
While turmeric has many beneficial properties, one of the most powerful is the ability to reduce inflammation. Turmeric contains the compound curcumin which is proven to be a power anti-inflammatory. Disorders such as arthritis and chronic pain can be the result of inflammation.
Pepper Makes it Better!
Adding fresh, dried or ground rhizome to your tea, smoothie or beverage is a wonderful way to reap the benefits of this amazing plant. You will often notice recipes utilizing turmeric will also call for a dash of pepper as well. Black pepper contains piperine which increases the absorption and effects of turmeric. Now would be a great time to mention turmeric may stain plastic blenders/containers and countertops.
