Top Indoor Places to Get Active This Winter

0

As the ever-popular television show Game of Thrones once told us, “Winter is Coming.” The temperature has dropped, frost has appeared, and sweatshirts were swapped for coats. I tried to hold out as long as I could, but when my child refused to hold onto the metal chains of the swing set, I knew it was time to look for some indoor places.

If you have a child like mine, he loves being active. Winter can be tough because of the limited places to run, climb, and jump. So where can you take your kids to burn off some energy? Check out the list below!

Play Cafes and Indoor Playgrounds

Play Cafes and Indoor Playgrounds are becoming more popular, and it’s no wonder why. With large climbing structures, opportunities for pretend play, and coffee for parents, it’s my idea of a win-win. Check out Momi Land (two locations: Hilliard and Lewis Center) or the Naz Commons (open 7 days a week) in Grove City.

Pro Tip: Several play cafes offer a discounted rate for the last hour of play, or a rewards card for multiple visits. Be sure to ask when you go.

Trampoline Parks

The ultimate place to get physical, Columbus has no shortage of trampoline parks around the city. Check out Get Air! in Hilliard or Rockin’ Jump in Westerville and Dublin. Most trampoline parks include zip lines, foam pits, and dodgeball for those who dare. For young jumpers, be sure to take advantage of toddler-specific times, which allow little ones to freely roam without accidentally running into older children.

Pro Tip: Check websites before you go for admission discounts and promotional offers.

Community Recreation Centers

When you can’t go to your local park, try your local rec center! Several community rec centers in Columbus offer indoor pools, basketball courts, and indoor tracks. With plenty to do for all ages and extended hours offered, there’s something for everyone (parents, too!). Check out the latest Program Guide for schedule, classes, and more.

Some community centers offer swimming, like the Worthington Community Center.

Pro Tip: While a variety of classes are offered all season, most community rec centers have Open Gyms for free or a nominal charge. My favorites include the Toddler Open Gym at Thompson Rec Center and the Pee Wee Open Gym at Westerville Rec Center.

Metro Park Indoor Nature Centers

You’ve probably walked the trails at one of the twenty Central Ohio Metro Parks (and if you haven’t, bundle up and do it immediately!) But have you checked out the indoor Nature Centers? Located at Blacklick Woods, Battelle Darby Creek, Highbanks, and Blendon Woods, these Nature Centers provide educational resources and activities. Get your hands wet in the indoor living stream at Battelle Darby Creek or watch the wildlife through the huge glass windows at Blendon Woods. I love that the Nature Centers open as early as 7 am, even in the winter—perfect for when the kids are awake and complaining they’re bored!

Pro Tip: Check out the Events Calendar before you go. There are plenty of craft times, storytimes, and more happening every week!
